This painting is called Credulity and was made about 2017. There are references to Hogarth’s engraving called “Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism.” As a satirist, Hogarth railed against many institutions - politics and religion included. The unbelievable absorption by the masses of misinformation, lies and false narratives is demonstrated in his work. As is the wanton misbehavior of those in power, and those seeking power. None of us is perfect, but the circus has come to town. I wonder what Hogarth’s work would look like today.
