About

Born in New York (1962), I graduated with my MFA from American University. As a student and shortly after, I worked at The Phillips Collection where I was strongly influenced by their collection of early modernism. I was involved with The Washington Studio School, as a student and later briefly as a faculty member, and soaked up an enthusiasm for plein air painting and the freshness of alla prima. Both my graduate studies and WSS emphasized the intersection of studio, art history and theory- which is a model I’ve maintained both in my development as an artist, and as an educator.

I continue to look for ways of stretching my thinking as an artist, and share those findings with students. I continue to find art history vital and relevant, while incorporating new insights of our contemporary world.

My subject tends to be the things held closest: family life, daily observations, musings. My resources vary from direct observation to pinterest, family photos and snapshots while driving. It is all material to make paintings.
